- Article about Betty Jo Streff, Des Plaines resident and former Douglas Aircraft employee, who joined the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) and served during World War II. Streff, who was interested in aviation, took preliminary flight training while employed at the Douglas Aircraft plant in Des Plaines. She enlisted in the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASPs) in February 1944 and served at the Eastern Training Command, Columbus Army Air Field, Columbus, Mississippi, where she flew Beechcraft AT-10's and BT-13's as an engineering test pilot, ferry pilot and administrative pilot. She and her fellow WASPs were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010 in recognition of their service. From the June 16, 1944 issue of the Des Plaines Suburban Times.
