- Description
- Photograph of the students and teachers at Orchard Place School, circa 1900-1910. The one room school house was located near Higgins and Lee. Built in 1855, the Orchard Place schoolhouse lacked running water, so students received drinking water in a pail with a tin dipper from a nearby farmhouse. A small wood burner heated the school in the winter. The teacher stands at the center back and she alone taught the forty students in this photo. Siblings Arthur, Alice, and Clarence Boesche are likely among the children photographed inside the school as Orchard Place School resided on their uncle Charles Boesche's farm. In 1923, this one room school was torn down and a two-room, brick school replaced it on the same site.
