- Description
- Photograph of "Kneel For Peace & Stand For Justice," a peaceful demonstration organized in solidarity with victims of violence against black Americans by police officers. The event was organized by Des Plaines Families Against Racism, a local group of parents, students and other concerned individuals. Protestors gathered at the corner of Lee and Oakton streets in Des Plaines, IL around 6 pm on the evening of June 5, 2020. Over 1,000 people were in attendance, according to a report in the June 9, 2020 edition of the Des Plaines Journal. Attendees wore face coverings and practiced social distancing throughout the demonstration due to coronavirus restrictions. During the event protestors chanted slogans and held up signs (as shown here), and knelt for nine minutes, in recognition of the death of George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man who died on May 25, 2020 after Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin knelt on his neck for over eight minutes.
