Mayor Visits 'Self-Help' Food, Clothing Pantry Mayor Mike Albrecht re- cently visited the Self-Help Closet and Food Pantry in the lower level of the old West School building on Thacker Street and Second Avenue in Des Plaines. Albrecht received a typical bag of basic foods from Don Rousey, assistant food coordi- nator of the pantry; Sue Fijalkowski, who screens recipi- ents for eligibility to receive surplus government foods; and Jane Horn, president and active manager of the closet. In addition to the distribu- tion of food; the Self-Help Closet and Food Pantry re- ceives, sons, and distributes mens, women's, and children’s clothing and infant layettes, household items, and other family needs.: It serves the people of Des Plaines whose incomes fall below the poverty level as established by the federal government. "Open days" at the Self- Help Closet and Food Pantry are the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month from 2 to 4 p.m. when both food and clothing are distributed. On the remaining Tuesdays, from 2 to 4 p.m., the Pantry is open only tor the distribu- tion of food. The service depends upon the generosity of the community. The closet is ever in need of good, clean, practical clothing. It is particularly in need of children's clothing and sturdy men's clothing and shoes. The closet also needs volunteer workers as well as food drives and clothing drives.
