- Description
- Portrait of the Stellman children - Frieda, Fred, and Minnie - of Orchard Place, 1890-1900s. Orchard Place was a farming community southwest of Des Plaines. Bottom of photographic print is cut off but the address "443 Sedgwick St" is visible. The children are dressed in typical fashion for children of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with Fred Stellman in knee length pants called knickerbockers and Frieda and Minnie in short dresses and loose, long hair. The baggy and loose fit of Fred’s knickerbockers not only provided freedom of movement for play, but also provided room to grow and were easy for mothers to make at home. Girls like Frieda and Minnie were dressed liked little women with clothes that mirrored their mother’s, just with shorter hemlines.
