- Direct mail advertisement for the Spiegler's Department Store's going out of business sale mailed to Dagny Gregersen. Spiegler's was in business in Des Plaines from 1900 to 1992. It was originally founded by Louis Spiegler and his brother Benjamin Spiegler. The original store - at first called Spiegler Brothers - was first located on Ellinwood Street and opened on June 2, 1900. Spiegler's Department Store was the anchor store at the Des Plaines Mall, which opened on November 10, 1977. Spiegler's survived two world wars, a devastating fire, and the Great Depression before going out of business in 1992.
